Horizon: Zero Dawn had an impressive launch, selling 2.6 million copies within its first two weeks and becoming Sony’ best-selling new exclusive intellectual property for the PS4. It was a departure from developer Guerilla Games’ history of making first-person shooters with the Killzone franchise, but it looks like that change for the studio paid off.
According to Sony, to date Horizon: Zero Dawn has sold 3.4 million copies. In an interview with Glixel, Sony Interactive Entertainment America president Shawn Layden says the game got Sony off to a good start in 2017 with a very successful launch, especially for a studio who stepped out into a new genre:
“We’ve been so proud of what that studio has been able to do. It’s a brave step for that studio to go from making shooters like Killzone to an open world game.”
Interestingly, Horizon: Zero Dawn put up good numbers in digital sales via the PlayStation Store, which has accounted for 915,000 of the total sales so far for Horizon: Zero Dawn. Layden says its an example of how the PlayStation Store has grown to be the largest retailer of PlayStation games in the world, with 40 percent of new game sales being made through Sony’s online store instead of physical copies bought at a brick-and-mortar store:
“This kind of shift changes everything. It changes the publishing model, it allows smaller players to put out games, it affects DLC and it has a huge impact.”
Speaking of DLC, Guerilla Games is currently working on story expansion for Horizon: Zero Dawn, although there’s no word on when that will release. It would probably be a good idea to keep an eye open for it next week during Sony’s E3 press conference.
If Horizon: Zero Dawn can keep selling copies, it could sell up to 8 million copies over its lifetime, just as one research firm predicted. If Sony can continue to move the game through the holiday season this year it’s possible to hit 6 million copies sold, which that research firm pegged sales to be at by the end of 2017.
Horizon: Zero Dawn was well liked by fans and critics, praised for its beautiful and engaging open world and its interesting narrative. Game Rant gave the game 4.5 out of 5—be sure to read our full review.
