Pokemon GO was once the game that everyone was talking about but the mobile title has certainly dipped in popularity since its summer 2016 launch. Many players have drifted away from the game but developer Niantic has now launched a new effort to bring those lapsed Pokemon GO players back into the fold.
Pokemon GO players who haven’t been playing the game regularly say that Niantic is now sending them emails promising major rewards in an effort to entice them. The message says that “we haven’t seen you in a while” and includes a promotional code to unlock a “special gift” containing three Egg Incubators and one Lucky Egg (this doubles the amount of XP a player earns for the duration of 30 minutes). Players have just three days to redeem the code before it expires.
The message also notes that “a lot has happened in Pokemon GO recently,” telling players to “come back and give it a try!” Niantic recently introduced even more Gen 3 Pokemon to the mobile game and the new dynamic weather system uses real-life weather conditions to influence gameplay. For example, certain weather conditions can increase the strength of certain Pokemon-type attacks and players may see more of a particular Pokemon type.

One of the biggest criticisms of Pokemon GO – and one of the main reasons that people have strayed from the game – is a lack of content updates. Some players complained that a lack of new Pokemon, gameplay features, and events meant that they had less reason to play the hit mobile game every day. Looking at the aforementioned Gen 3 arrivals and the dynamic weather system, it does seem like Niantic is doing what it can to address that pain point.
However, there are several others areas of the game that Niantic will also need to address in order to bring back longstanding fans who dropped the game due to disappointment. For example, even the most famous Pokemon GO players have complained about the game’s EX Raid battle system and the perceived randomness of its invites. Some say that they have not been able to enjoy the feature due to a lack of invites.
For these players, a few incubators and a Lucky Egg will not be a good enough reason to play the game again. Other major features such as the teased PvP and trading gameplay could make a difference, though, appealing to all lapsed players so hopefully, Niantic will introduce those soon.
Pokemon GO is available for Android and iOS devices.
