Pokemon GO Introduces Monthly Community Day Event

Just recently, Niantic disappointed many Pokemon GO fans by announcing plans to end support for certain iPhones and iPads that are “not capable of upgrading to iOS 11,” as it could leave many players of the popular mobile augmented reality game out of the fun when their devices are phased out at some point in the future. Nevertheless, the developer is pressing on with other PoGO updates for the time being, as it has now announced a brand new event series for the game called “Community Day” that will take place every month.

According to Niantic, a “special” Pokemon will pop up for a three hour window during the course of each Pokemon GO Community Day event. Should trainers catch the unique creature before time’s up, it will be able to acquire a special exclusive move that it wouldn’t have been able to learn otherwise. What’s more is that every Community Day will also feature other bonuses, such as increased XP and Stardust, or Lure Modules that can last for three hours.

Those looking forward to the first Pokemon GO Community Day will likely be pleased to learn that it’s right around the corner, as it takes place on January 20, 2018. The initial event will give trainers the chance to catch a Pikachu that knows the move “Surf.” Niantic has stressed that in order to catch Surfing Pikachu, players must visit one of their local parks. Plus, anyone who takes part in PoGO‘s first Community Day will be privy to a Double XP bonus during the event’s operating hours, which can be found below.

Asia-Pacific Region: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM JST

Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM UTC

Americas and Greenland: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM PST

All things considered, Pokemon GO‘s inclusion of Community Days seems like a decent first step toward satisfying players who have been wanting more to do in between major events. Not to mention, one could argue that the special Pokemon introduced in some of PoGO‘s Community Day events could provide a decent amount of variety to Gyms and the overall meta. Of course, there are still several issues–namely how the EX Raid system operates–that fans might have preferred to be addressed first.

Pokemon GO is available now for Android and iOS devices.
