When Destiny 2 was announced and Bungie and Activision confirmed that the game would be coming to PC, those on the platform were delighted as the first Destiny was console-only. But has that hype for the PC version of the game translated into sales and revenue?
According to a new report, that hype has very much paid off. A report by industry analysis firm SuperData Research states that Destiny 2 had a “solid release” on PC and that the game has proved to be “very successful” on the platform. Although the SuperData report does not specifically state how much money Destiny 2 PC has made, it does reveal that “high attach rates” for the deluxe version of the game helped to drive the average selling price up.
Moreover, Destiny 2 was the fourth highest grossing game on PC worldwide for the month of October 2017, and this figure includes both purchases of the game and revenue from microtransactions. The top three highest grossing titles include League of Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, so Bungie’s game has done well for itself.
The PC release of Destiny 2 could have easily been stymied by several factors. For example, many were unhappy that the game launched on PC of choice over a month after the console versions were released. The fact that Destiny 2 PC is exclusive to Blizzard’s Battle.net and isn’t available on the more widely used PC gaming platform, Steam, is also a disappointment.
However, the game itself does offer a lot of things that PC players have asked for. This includes things like an uncapped framerate and 4K support. While Bungie could have just limited the PC version of the game to the same technical constraints as the console versions, features like this allow Destiny 2 PC players to make the best use of their rigs. Players can use the full extent of their PCs’ power, which is something that many appreciate.
It will be interesting to see whether Destiny 2 manages to maintain its position on the top grossing chart over the next few months. The Destiny 2 PC launch wasn’t perfect and there were some game-breaking bugs but as Bungie acted quickly to fix these, did this impact sales of the game in November?
And how much will the release of the Curse of Osiris DLC impact Destiny 2 sales this month? That much is unclear yet but all eyes will be on SuperData’s next few reports to see how things have played out.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
