Sony came out swinging at the Paris Games Week 2017, showing off new trailers for a ton of its upcoming games including Spider-Man, The Last of Us 2, and more. The company also threw in some surprises like Ghost of Tsushima, a visually stunning action title set in 13th century Japan under development by InFamous developer at Sucker Punch Productions. 2018 promises to be another big year for PlayStation 4 fans, and Sony is looking to start the year off strong with one of its biggest franchises in God of War.
The latest trailer for God of War strikes a balance between story and combat, opening with the discovery of a Soul Eater, which Kratos’ son Atreus reveals is a creature that is capable of taking away a person’s afterlife if killed by one. As the creature moves on, multiple smaller enemies attack Kratos, which lets him show off a few of his new combat tricks. Kratos is able to unleash a devastating energy wave when charging his axe or toss the weapon like a boomerang to either strike an enemy at range or to interact with the environment to cause an explosion.
Atreus is also actively involved in the fight, using his bow and even performing a dropkick that leads into a cinematic finisher for Kratos. The trailer finishes with a brief tease of what appears to be the revenant creature that was teased a few weeks prior, before flashing to the title card at the end.
Unfortunately, both Sony and Sony Santa Monica aren’t quite ready to put a hard date on this one quite yet. For now, the time frame remains locked in with an early 2018 release window. Considering the success that Horizon Zero Dawn had this year when it launched in February, it’s likely that God of War could also follow a similar path in 2018.
Sony Santa Monica has previously discussed the dynamic combat between Atreus and Kratos and this trailer gives a solid, albeit brief look at that system at work. Atreus can also be heard shouting directions to Kratos, providing audible clues to help the player manage multiple attacks during combat. From what fans have seen so far in trailers to what the developer has said in the past, it appears that Atreus is going to follow the path of Ellie from The Last of Us as an active combatant rather than a passive participant during the campaign.
God of War launches exclusively for the PlayStation 4 early in 2018.
