Pokemon fans were delighted earlier this week when it was confirmed that the Detective Pikachu movie will begin filming early next year. But while the movie has already secured some top talent to direct and to write the script, it’s still a mystery who will play the characters depicted on-screen.
According to a new report from That Hashtag Show, Legendary Pictures is currently in the process of securing an actor to play the role of Detective Pikachu. The shortlist has now been whittled down to four, major movie action stars: Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The report explains that “Legendary has not had any actual meetings or discussions with any of the actors about the role.” The show’s hosts also state that, “these are names that have been talked about by the creative team of the film as potential candidates of interest” and that nothing has been confirmed yet.
Although Legendary has yet to make a final decision about who will play Detective Pikachu in the live-action adaptation, many will be rooting for The Rock to at least audition for the role. Earlier this year, The Rock dressed up as Pikachu as a fun and silly Easter surprise for his daughter, Jasmine, whose favorite Pokemon is Pikachu. While many thought that it was hilarious to see the former wrestler dressed up as the character, it has helped to endear fans to the thought of The Rock playing the motion-capture role of Detective Pikachu in the big-screen movie.
Moreover, the contrast of The Rock’s gruff voice and his stature (he’s 6′ 5″) with Detective Pikachu‘s adorable body could also prove to be rather funny. Surely that juxtaposition is interesting enough that curious moviegoers would flock to theaters to go and see the film.
However, others may be disappointed that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Danny DeVito is apparently not in the running for the role. Several years ago, Pokemon fans began a petition to get DeVito to do the English voice-acting for Detective Pikachu, hoping that Nintendo, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company would hear them out. The petition was ultimately unsuccessful but it managed to garner over 50,000 signatures during its run.
As Legendary is still in the process of casting someone for the titular role, there is still a slim chance that DeVito could be considered. It seems unlikely but then again, few may have expected The Rock to be on the shortlist for the Detective Pikachu movie either.
