Injustice 2 Director Ed Boon is once again teasing fans, this time with regards to the forthcoming Fighter Pack 3. While Fighter Pack 2 has not concluded its run – Hellboy has yet to join the fighting game’s roster – Boon has instantly piqued fans’ interest with some statements about FP3’s new DLC characters.
Thus far we know that The Atom will be joining the Injustice 2 roster as part of Fighter Pack 3, but Boon says that an even more exciting addition is waiting in the wings. While he wouldn’t say who or what will be the next DLC character revealed for Fighter Pack 3, Boon was willing to reveal that this fighter is unlike anything seen in a NetherRealm Studios fighting game thus far.
According to Boon, this new Injustice 2 character will surprise players with its style of play, which suggests the traditional punch-kick combos might be out the door. It’s also possible that this fighter will be surprising in the sense that they are an unexpected pull from the DC Comics universe, which extends to sub labels like Vertigo.
“This update will have a new character that will surprise everyone. No one is expecting their style of play. I’ve never talked about it, it’s the first time I’ve said it.”
Boon is no stranger to teases and he has certainly offered a tantalizing quote, but parsing out what he means by “surprise” is likely to have fans jumping from possibility to possibility. Characters like Spawn and Rorschach from Watchmen have been thrown out as potential additions, but it’s hard to say if those characters meet Boon’s description.
Spawn might be a fit since the character uses his suit to create weaponry and armor, but that still feels like a part of NetherRealm’s wheelhouse. And Rorschach is a unique pick, but he may not be flashy enough to stand next to iconic DC heroes like Superman and Batman.
If nothing else, NetherRealm has a vast library of characters to choose from, and a rabid fan base that is anxious to hear about what’s next. Hellboy was a major unveiling, and was previously thought to be the studio’s showstopper and conclusion for the Injustice 2 DLC run. But now that Fighter Pack 3 is in the cards, and Atom is on the way, the speculation has begun anew.
Injustice 2 is out now for PS4 and Xbox One.
